Review by Heiner Ganßmann (Freie Universität Berlin, Institut für Soziologie, Berlin, Germany) // Economic Sociology: European Electronic Newsletter. 2004. Vol. 6. No. 1. October.

Geoffrey Ingham has written a brilliant book about money – one that is bound deeply to affect the way that social scientists from various disciplines think about money. A tour de force!

Richard Swedberg, Cornell University

This is a very important book. Geoffrey Ingham can rightly claim to have written a work that is a breakthrough in the field of economic sociology. But he has done much more than this. He has also broken down some of the barriers to knowledge artificially imposed by the narrow compartmentalization of the specialized academic disciplines. Here are the foundations, not only for the understanding of money as a social institution, but of capitalism itself.
John Smithin, York University, Toronto
